Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Wow, what an amazing sequel to a truly fantastic series! This was another book that I could not hardly put down! I love the premise of these books and the fact that Katniss is so rebellious makes for some interesting twists and turns in Catching Fire. I wish that I could say more about this book but I am afraid I will reveal too much if I say much more! I will say that I loved the major twist at the end of the book and I cannot wait to see what happens in book three. Unfortunately, I have to wait at least another 10 months before it comes out!
**Again, if anyone wishes to discuss spoilers in the comments, that would be great!**

Most surprising read of the month: I absolutely LOVED The Hunger Games! It was thrilling and I had a difficult time putting it down! I am going to read the sequel soon! :)
Most disappointing read of the month: That would definitely be A Wrinkle in Time. I thought since so many people gave it such high praise, that I would automatically love it. I was wrong haha!
Current read: I just started reading The Thirteenth Tale and it is interesting so far.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss is smart, athletic, and fast. She can take down a rabbit with a bow and arrow, hitting it straight through the eye. Will these skills be enough to survive the Hunger Games?
Suzanne Collins, the author of the middle-grade fantasy series The Underland Chronicles begins anew, exploring a future landscape that will be familiar to devotees of science fiction's dystopic strain. In a nation called Panem, which occupies the landmass that is the present United States, a parasitical fascist Capitol dominates 12 conquered districts. There was a thirteenth district but it was obliterated during a rebellion. The totalitarian government keeps the subjected populations in line by threatened devastation, starvation, and brutality.

I found this book and concept to be utterly fascinating. I love the post-apocalyptic feel that was conveyed throughout the entire book. It is interesting that this country, Panem used to actually be the United States and the history of what happened because of the country's rebellion against the Capitol was interesting as well. I thought that the characters and the plot were astounding. I really felt for Katniss throughout the book and I cannot wait to read Catching Fire soon!
**There are some things that I would love to talk about in the book and even one thing that I didn't like, but I feel that it is spoilery, and so if you have read the book and wish to discuss it, please do so with me in the comments. Thank you!**

The Crime: Armed robbery to the tune of nine million dollars
Dom Rizzi robbed a bank, stashed the money, and did the time. His family couldn’t be more proud. He always was the smart one.
The Cousin: Joe Morelli
Joe Morelli, Dom Rizzi, and Dom’s sister, Loretta, are cousins. Morelli is a cop, Rizzi robs banks, and Loretta is a single mother waiting tables at the firehouse. The all-American family.
The Complications: Murder, kidnapping, destruction of personal property, and acid reflux
Less than a week after Dom’s release from prison, Joe Morelli has shadowy figures breaking into his house and dying in his basement. He’s getting threatening messages, Loretta is kidnapped, and Dom is missing.
The Catastrophe: Moonman
Morelli hires Walter “Mooner” Dunphy, stoner and “inventor” turned crime fighter, to protect his house. Morelli can’t afford a lot on a cop’s salary, and Mooner will work for potatoes.
The Cupcake: Stephanie Plum
Stephanie and Morelli have a long-standing relationship that involves sex, affection, and driving each other nuts. She’s a bond enforcement agent with more luck than talent, and she’s involved in this bank-robbery-gone-bad disaster from day one.
The Crisis: A favor for Ranger
Security expert Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, has a job for Stephanie that will involve night work. Morelli has his own ideas regarding Stephanie’s evening activities.
The Conclusion: Only the fearless should read Fourteen.
Thrills, chills, and incontinence may result.

I think that this series is really quite humorous! I have enjoyed most of the books in this series so far. I honestly think that Lula and Grandma Mazur are the funniest characters and they really make the books great. I also really like Mooner now. The only part of this story I didn't care for was the favor that Stephanie did for Ranger. (You will have to read the book to know about that favor)! If you like funny reads and murder mysteries, then I highly recommend this series!

A Wrinkle in Time
Madeleine L'Engle
YA fiction; scifi; series
190 pages
Photobucket
It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.
"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."
A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg's father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.

This is so not what I expected out of this book. It is probably one of the weirdest books I have ever read! I just realized that if this is genuine scifi, then maybe scifi is not a genre that I will enjoy reading. The plot just didn't hold my interest. Not only that, but this book really did seem dated. That being said, I still would like to see the 2003 film version and apparently there is another version coming out soon. I do wonder what happens later on in the books, but I don't think I will read any more books in this series. Even though I didn't care for the story, I am glad that I borrowed it and now can say that I read A Wrinkle in Time.
(A bit off-topic,but I had to pick this book cover because I borrowed this book from a friend and she had this book cover and the blue blob of a face scares the beejezus out of me! HAHA!)

The Wild Things
Dave Eggers
YA fiction; fantasy
285 pages

The Wild Things — based very loosely on the storybook by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay cowritten with Spike Jonze — is about the confusions of a boy, Max, making his way in a world he can’t control. His father is gone, his mother is spending time with a younger boyfriend, his sister is becoming a teenager and no longer has interest in him. At the same time, Max finds himself capable of startling acts of wildness: he wears a wolf suit, bites his mom, and can’t always control his outbursts. During a fight at home, Max flees and runs away into the woods. He finds a boat there, jumps in, and ends up on the open sea, destination unknown. He lands on the island of the Wild Things, and soon he becomes their king. But things get complicated when Max realizes that the Wild Things want as much from him as he wants from them. Funny, dark, and alive, The Wild Things is a timeless and time-tested tale for all ages.

This was such a unique interpretation of a children's classic! I will admit that I did not like the beginning of the book. It was a bit too Roald Dahl-esque for my taste. (I'm not a huge Dahl fan, sorry.) Once Max reached the land of the monsters though, the whole story changed, and I was engrossed in the book. I read the whole thing in one day, which these days, is difficult for me to accomplish. I did not really want to see the film version, but now after reading The Wild Things, I'd really like to see the movie. I think once it is out on DVD, I will rent it. I want to thank my book club here for picking this book for our monthly read. If it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't have picked this book up!

books- just ONE more chapter!
"As the rest of the pile calmed down and began to sleep and snore, Max crawled out of the pile-on to find fresh air. He settled on the edge of the fur mountain, putting his head on someone's leg. The sky was just beginning to change, the world pulsing in the gauzy pink light of dawn. There was debris everywhere, like a landscape after an earthquake, and Max felt very much at home."

Dreams come true in this hilarious, feel-good fairy tale about life, love, and dating literature’s most eligible bachelor!
After a string of disastrous dates, Emily Albright decides she’s had it with modern-day love and would much rather curl up with Pride and Prejudice and spend her time with Mr. Darcy, the dashing, honorable, and passionate hero of Jane Austen’s classic. So when her best friend suggests a wild week of margaritas and men in Mexico with the girls, Emily abruptly flees to England on a guided tour of Jane Austen country instead. Far from inspiring romance, the company aboard the bus consists of a gaggle of little old ladies and one single man, Spike Hargreaves, a foul-tempered journalist writing an article on why the fictional Mr. Darcy has earned the title of Man Most Women Would Love to Date.
The last thing Emily expects to find on her excursion is a broodingly handsome man striding across a field, his damp shirt clinging to his chest. But that’s exactly what happens when she comes face-to-face with none other than Mr. Darcy himself. Suddenly, every woman’s fantasy becomes one woman’s reality. . . .

This was actually a pretty cute read! Being a bookworm, I really appreciated Emily's love of books and bookstores. These kinds of books makes me wish I could find work at a bookstore! Mr. Darcy did get on my nerves at times throughout the book, but I did love how this book paralleled the story of Pride & Prejudice. If you love Jane Austen, bookworms, and a cute love story, then this is the book for you.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Stieg Larsson
Fiction; mystery; thriller
590 pages

An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.
Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pieced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

At first, I admit that I didn't think I was going to enjoy this book. It was a little dry with all of the business facts and I wasn't sure where the story was going. However, the second half of this book made up for the dullness that I endured. I really thought Lisbeth Salander was an awesome character, and I hope that she is in the later installments of this book series. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Books read in September:

34&35. The Vampire Diaries: The Fury & the Dark Reunion by L.J. Smith, Photobucket
36. The Help by Kathryn Stockett , Photobucket
37. Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, Photobucket
38. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris, Photobucket

Most surprising read of the month: I absolutely LOVED The Help! It was our September book club read and honestly, I wouldn't have picked it out if it wasn't for our club. This is one of the best books I have read so far this year!
Most disappointing read of the month: I would have to say that Pygmalion was my most disappointing read of September. I found the play "My Fair Lady" to be amazing, but as for reading the play, it wasn't nearly as interesting as I'd hoped.
Current read: I just started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson last night. It is pretty good so far!

Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability." She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome--and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life....
But Bill has a disability of his own: He's a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of--big surprise--murder. And when one of Sookie's coworkers is killed, she fears she's next....

I have just finished watching both seasons of "True Blood", so I wanted to reread the books. Surprisingly, I think that the first installment in this series is one of the weakest in the Southern Vampire series. I do not like the book version of Bill. I find him to be quite annoying. Another reason that I think that this book is a bit lacking is that there is not much involvement and interaction with Eric, who happens to be my favorite character in both the book and televion series. I think that he adds a dynamic to the series that was not as present in Dead Until Dark. I know it sounds like I didn't like this book, but in fact, I really do enjoy it. It sucked (haha) me into the rest of the books. I am going to reread the entire series and wait (as patiently as I can) for the third season of "True Blood" to begin. I haven't read the latest three, but I cannot wait to get to them!
